Tivoli House. (Stage One) Built, 2016

This family home is a double-fronted Victorian house located in the leafy suburb of South Yarra. The traditional sequence of rooms was edited for contemporary life. New joinery is placed in rooms like furniture pieces, balancing the contrast between old and new, just as the act of cutting through older fabric is made tangible by thin steel frame thresholds.

Three front rooms have been altered to carve out a spacious master bedroom with walk-in robe and ensuite, which occupies the south wing of the home, and employ a contemporary vernacular woven with the existing Victorian-era fabric. Elsewhere, a kid’s room, sitting room and family bathroom similarly manoeuvre modern treatments around existing period features. A subterranean cellar has been concealed within the original bluestone foundations with a permanent central table and dim lighting amplifying the gravitas of the space. At the rear, the existing kitchen was refitted to serve the family for another few years while Stages 2 and 3 are completed.
