Future Future

Restaurant 1712. Built, 2018

A dilapidated red brick building with substantial rear lean-to and north-facing terrace suggested a multi-faceted and multi-experiential response from the outset. The convoluted series of Victorian proportioned rooms informed a layout which offers many different dining experiences to suit individuals, couples and groups for occasions ranging from a quick office lunch to a formal celebration. The layering works in plan and section as the multiple levels and ceiling heights amplify the appreciation of discreet spaces.

The restaurant takes cues from Japanese culture both in architecture and menu, the wabi-sabi approach of layering old and new styles and materials. The existing building provided a rich background for a pared back selection of contemporary materials suited to their function. Colour and texture are generally muted with select elements providing interest and delight intermittently.
